On 22 May 2018, EU Debate Club was held in Room 503 of Academia Hall at Rokkodai campus of Kobe University.
9 participants first checked some facts about Catalan independence referendum in October 2017 and the reasons it caused a deep political crisis in Spain. Participants then discussed the background of Catalonia's independence claims. The EU has treated the whole matter as an internal problem for Spain. Participants therefore discussed the relevance of Catalonia's case in a broader European context, referring to regionalist political parties in Scotland and Italy.

The debate also raised other interesting points, such as the different stance towards Catalan independence between young people and older generations and possible impact of Catalan independence on the local football teams.
